Victoria Police Gazette 1897. 1897. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, Police Gazettes contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else. They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments in the Police Service, lists of Justices of the Peace, lists of arrests and discharges and descriptions, inquest verdicts, lost or stolen items, missing stock animals, escaped prisoners and missing persons. Some features of this year's issues: <ul> <li>lists of all officers in the police force, giving rank, date of birth and date of appointment</li> <li>lists of returning officers for electoral districts</li> <li>auctioneer licences</li> <li>some photos</li> </ul> Example entry taken from the 7 July 1897 issue: <blockquote> Highway Robbery and Stealing from the Person Two men, names unknown, are charged, on warrants, with assaulting and robbing John McMahon, 567 Spencer-street, West Melbourne, on the 1st inst. Descriptions:-1st. About 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark moustache only, about a fortnight's growth of beard. 2nd. About 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, thin build, fair complexion, fair moustache only; wore faded clothes and a black boxer hat. - O.5483. 3rd July, 1897. </blockquote> Example entry taken from the 14 July 1897 issue: <blockquote> Deserters of Wives and Children Minnie White is charged, on warrant, with abandoning a female child under 2 years of age, with Sarah Ann Baron, 47 Victoria-street, Fitzroy, at Fitzroy, on the 6th February last. Description: - Victorian, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slender build, dark complexion, dark hair, frizzy in front, very much freckled, very white teeth.
